City inspires environmental champions at Wallacedene Primary School

The City of Cape Town marked World Environmental Education Day today with an inspiring event at Wallacedene Primary School in Kraaifontein.
Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, helped encourage learners to take responsibility for their environment through proper waste disposal and recycling.
The event brought to life the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Empowering the Next Generation for a Sustainable Future’. Learners were introduced to key waste management practices through fun, interactive activities with the anti-litter mascot, Bingo.
Bingo captivated the children with games and storytelling, driving home the importance of keeping their school and community clean by throwing litter in the bin and separating recyclables from general waste.
‘It is crucial that we teach our children the value of protecting their environment. The habits they form today will help shape a cleaner, healthier Cape Town for tomorrow.‘Wallacedene Primary was chosen for the event as part of the City’s efforts to promote waste awareness and recycling in communities where these practices can have a significant impact. The enthusiasm from the learners around this message was infectious and I am hopeful that parents and communities can now do their part keep this flame alive, and support the children's passion for the environment.
‘This initiative is about more than keeping our city clean. It’s about equipping the next generation with the knowledge and skills and motivation to create a sustainable future for all of us,’ said Alderman Twigg.
